Brooklyn Burgess

Brooklyn Burgess participated in the 2024 CLS Urdu Program hosted by the American Institute of Indian Studies in Lucknow, India. She is currently pursuing a BS in microbiology, immunology, and molecular genetics with a minor in global health at the University of California, Los Angeles. Brooklyn's professional goal is to work as a field epidemiologist for the CDC.

Why Urdu?

As a National Security Language Initiative for Youth (NSLI-Y) Hindi alumna, I decided to further my language studies at UCLA by taking the intermediate level Hindi-Urdu course. This was my first introduction to Urdu and I fell in love with its intricacies. I decided to apply for CLS Urdu because I saw it as a wonderful opportunity to learn through immersion.

Favorite Word

My favorite word is tehzeeb (تہذیب), which encapsulates the politeness and hospitality of the Lucknowi culture. And of course, its associated word is Adaab (آداب), a greeting that originated in this beautiful city.

Career Goals

My plan is to get a master's degree in public health and my professional goals are to work as a field epidemiologist for the CDC. Through Urdu, I will connect with local communities and serve them by using the language to understand their needs.

CLS’s Impact

By speaking to my host family and the locals throughout my time in Lucknow, I gained a deep understanding of the social dynamics and cultural values in India. I learned a lot about the inequalities that exist, and I now carry these experiences with me as an aspiring public health practitioner.
